The letter excerpt:

There one [sic] the window pane near me, poor dear Eddy scratched his name and mine. Poor boy. God took him and tho' we all wept at his being taken from us wh was it not much better for him — now he is free from all worries and cares of this world, and was not his young life made up of disappointments! And how good he was and why was his life thus dark and his character never understood and he valued too late. Poor Aunt Alix, to loose a beloved Child, it must be too fearful. God comfort her. But no, I don't want to speak about such sad things. I don't know what has come to me to-night.

Above: Alix.

Above: Nicholas.

Above: Prince Albert Victor "Eddy", Duke of Clarence and Avondale.

Note: Eddy had passed away on January 14, 1892 at the age of 28, during the Russian flu pandemic of 1889-1892. Queen Victoria had seen him as a great potential husband for Alix, who refused the match after a great emotional struggle. Eddy was the son of the then-Prince and Princess of Wales, Edward and Alexandra ("Aunt Alix"), and his death came as an immense shock to his family and all of the United Kingdom.
