Alexandra wrote this letter to her recently widowed aunt Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll on May 17/30, 1914, about Alexei's patience in his battle with his hemophilia and about other family details. It seems that the first page might be missing.

The letter:

2/ I do hope yr. health is none the worse for all you have gone through. You will feel so shockingly lonely, poor Darling, would that I could be of some tiny use or comfort to you. —

You kindly asked after the Children, so I enclose their last photos to give you an idea what they look like. Thank God Alexei has been keeping in much better health & has grown very much. He will be 10 this summer. I think you wld. love him, you always loved boys so much. He has such a tender heart — & bears pains so patiently — is very merry & clean.

We return to Zarskoe in two weeks, & regret having to leave this lovely place. You cannot imagine what quantities of roses we have — of every colour & every sort & so immense — our [illegible] to be an artist to paint from morn to night. —

But I must end, Baby is waiting to say his evening prayers with me. Nicky, the children & I kiss you very affectionately.

Goodbye & God bless & help you, beloved Aunt Louise,
Ever yr devoted
Alix.
