Alix's letter to Ernst, dated May 9/21, 1889

The letter:

Darling Ernie,
Just this morning a Telegramm came, saying that Aunt Beatrice had got a fine Boy, & that mother & child were doing well. — I am glad that it has gone off so well, may it only continue so. —

Well, we saw Grancy yesterday, who told us everything. I am glad that your rooms are nice, so that [you] can be able to arrange them comfortably. —

How pleasant that you can go so often to the Theatre, as that must be an Erholung, after your working. —

Tebe sends you & Alex, very many messages. She came yesterday with all my other girls, whom I wanted to see still before this summer. —

One misses you dreadfully here. The house does seem so empty & quiet, especially now, that Papa has gone to Munich. — Yesterday it poured the whole day, but now the sun is shining, yet the weather looks rather suspicious.

I finished "Jess", & found it most exciting, & the descriptions, especially at the beginning, are beautiful. —

Friday we go to Jugenheim, for Louis' Birthday, & I hope we shall see A. Vicky & the Cousins there. — Saturday we go to Mainz. We shall always be coming in Wednesdays & Saturdays. —

But now Goodbye, & God bless you. With a long & tender kiss, I am, Darling Boy, Ever your most loving Alix.

[P. S.] I shall write again as soon as possible.

The squirrel ran away, up one of the largest trees, the other day. We gave all hope up, for getting it again, but tied the basket on the tree, & by & by it came down into it, & you can think my delight at getting it again. It is now always in a cage, yesterday I took it out driving. —

I put in due of the good smelling flowers.

Nicky is at Zarskoe, & Georgy leaves before Paul's Wedding, as his ship goes to Madera.

Above: Alix and Ernst.

Note: Erholung = recreation

"Jess" is an 1887 novel by H. Rider Haggard.

due = Alix's misspelling of "dew"
