JANUAR 17

Thursday
Darmstadt
Breakfast at nine. Then Papa went shooting in the Gross[illegible] Park with Lich & Laubach. —

Ernie left at 6.30 a.m. for Berlin, but he hopes to be home again on Monday morning, or evening. — Lessons.
U. William left at 11.30 for Berlin, & Sandro at 1.30 for Vienna.

I lunched at A. Julies, & from there drove with Gretchen, Mathilde von der Hoop, Alexi, Rosalie, Polly Radcliffe, & [illegible] Homburg to Kranichstein, where we skated. The ice is quite splendid but cracks. — Toni came for the Reading & working & tea, & then I had lessons, after which I wrote. — Gretchen stayed at home this evening. — Papa in the Theatre. — Supped at 8. Games. To bed towards ten. —

Friday
Darmstadt
At 8 Pfr. Sell came. Very interesting lesson. Breakfast at nine. Then Franks came to try on pink ball gown. Walked for half an hour with Wilhelmine. Then lessons. Luncheon at two. Papa again out shooting with Standesherrn. Left before 3 with Gretchen, for Kranichstein, where we skated a little — found Alexi again there. Tea. Lessons. Frl. von Bechtold. 2 hands & 4 hands. — wrote letters & cop: verses. Ladies went to the Theatre, Papa & the Gentlemen too. Supped at 8. Then Louis & I played four hands — to bed at 9½. Received a long letter [in code] — from Cocky. —

Darmstadt
Very cold again. At 9 Breakfast. Skated for half an hour in the Prince Emil's Garden with Gretchen, returned by a round about way. — Lessons. — Luncheon at two. — Raining a little, but still so cold. — Drove with Wilhelmino in the Taune. — Then rested. Lessons. Tea. Preparations. Wrote. — Am reading a charming book, called "Satanella", by G.J. White-Melville. — (People: Daisy, (Mr Walters), Miss Douglas, the General, Mrs Lushington. Lady Mary. Denis. "Soldier Bill. Norah.)
Watched Gretchen dress for a Ball. She looked quite delightful, so pretty & happy. Then sang. — At 8 supped. — Looked at Books. Wrote. — Bath & then to bed. —
