Alix's letter to Ernst, dated November 17, 1878

Source:

Alix wrote this letter to her brother Ernst on November 17, 1878. She states that their younger sister May (Marie) is doing better; May had actually died from diphtheria the previous day, and the children were not told of her death until after Alix had already written this letter. A few weeks later on December 14, their mother Alice too died of the disease, leaving the six year old Alix traumatised for life.

The letter:

Dear Ernie
thank you many times for your letter. I am very glad that you can write and Victoria is much better. I may not send a letter to Ella. I hope we can see her soon. Irene is a little better today. I am nearly better and have no more sore throat. May is a little better. With love from Alix.
