The letter:

April 24th 1894. Gatchina.

N 4.
My own beloved little darling,
Today the notes of the Fogelhändler arrived and I am so thankful to you my dearest one for having thought of my little wish. I shall try and learn it on the piano, so that you might sing it when I come to England! But it makes me downright sad to read the words of that pretty song, it reminds too strongly of those heavenly days at Coburg!!!! The evenings especially I miss you darling so awfully — that the only comfort I find is to sit down & begin to scribble off a letter to you! Today I felt very disapointed in not receiving a few dear lines from my girly-darling; every time I came into my room I rushed up to my table — but alas! it was desolate & the much wanted envelope was missing!

I got another letter though instead — & that was from Granny a very kind one too. But not knowing her handwriting it took me a great deal of trouble to decypher it. She was very impatient to see you arrive at Windsor. One thing I am particularly glad of, she said she wants you to remain quiet during the season, that means you won't be pulled about to balls & drawing-rooms etc.. well and so much the better!

Now a few remarks out of "English as she is spoke":

Of the man.
The brain. The inferior lip.
The brains. The superior lip.
The fixt of the leg. The marrow.
The ham. The reins.

Woman objects.
The busk. The paint or disguise.
The sash. The spindle.
The cornet. The patches.
The pumps. The skate.

Diseases.
The apoplexy. The megrime.
The scrofulas. The whitlow.
The melancholy. The rheumatisme
The vomitory.

Dress your hair's. Sing an area. At what o'clock dine him? These apricots and these peaches make me and to come water in mouth. He has spit in my coat. He has me take out my hairs. He does me some kicks. It must never to laugh of the unhappies! --

How do you find that rot? I wonder who might have been that fool to have published such absurd things. — Oh! sweety it is hard to be separated, never did I inquire on the spur of those happy days that it be so awful as it seems now. I told the first couple that for them it is much better, as they always see each other & they agreed especially after it had been at last decided yesterday that their wedding is going to be in the middle of July (in the end of yr. month).

I must tell you one thing my beloved little girly-dear, that it is both Papa's and Mama's great wish to see you here at home. We might come together in July over from England for Denis's wedding which is going to be celebrated at Peterhof. We would spend a nice fortnight together and then you would go back to Darmstadt. And I shall come there after the manouvres are over as we decided that before. Of course you understand my own darling how anxious my Parents are to see just quietly like that for a bit. I am sure it will be quite the same for Granny whether you leave about the same time for Russia or as you were to do before for Wolfsgarten.

The first couple would be delighted to see you before it leaves & so would be everybody. Well! but we shall speak about that when we meet won't we dearest one? I must finish this epistle of mine as the train leaves for town in a ¾ of an hour. I am going back to my regiment, but living here I must run about like the "ewige Jude" which is rather tiresome until I at last settle in the camp.

So good-bye my own darling beloved one. God bless you! With many & fond & loving kisses ever & ever your own deeply loving & devoted
old Nicky

P. S. Give my compliments sweetly to Gretchen & Madeleine!

Note: Nicholas mentions near the end of this letter that at home he has to run about like the "ewige Jude"  — "the eternal Jew". Anti-Semitism was rampant in Imperial Russia (ironic considering that Jesus Christ was Jewish and Orthodox Christianity is so deeply ingrained into Russian culture), and I do not support or endorse it in any way, but, like other forms of discrimination, to ignore it would be tantamount to further perpetuating it. Please note that Jewish people prefer for non-Jewish people to call them "Jewish people" rather than "Jews" precisely because of this history of anti-Semitic discrimination.

My own sweet beloved little girly-darling,
What joy your delightful letter from Darmstadt gave me. Every morning I am looking forward to receive a little message from you my душка! You don't know how happy every line you write makes me; I read your letters through till I know them almost by heart & then the words sound oh! tho thweet! tho thweet to my ears! Today looking over my boxes with letters I found to my great delight your too sweet old things from 1889 — it made my heart leap from joy because it reminded me of a good time!? — Often have I repeated to myself these verses that I love now the more as they appear to have told these:

Strive - Wait - and - Pray.

Strive: yet I do not promise
The prize you dream of today
Will not fade when you think to grasp it
And melt in your hand away.
But another and holier treasure
You would now perchance disdain,
Will come when yr. toil is over
And pay you for yr. all your pain. —

Wait: yet I do not tell you
The hour you long for now
Will not come with its radiance vanished
And a shadow upon its brow.
Yet far through the misty future
With a crown of starry light
An hour of joy you know not
Is winging her silent flight.

Pray: though the gift you ask for
May never come for your fears
May never repay your pleading
Yet pray and with hopeful tears
An answer — not that you long for
But diviner, will come, one day.
Your eyes are too dim to see it
Yet; strive & wait & pray! —

If my own darling knew what o'clock it is she would be furious with poor me! but it is so nice writing quite by one self when every soul is sleeping! So better I bid you good-night my little soul! Three fond kisses and God's blessings upon you me sweet darling!... —

May 6th. Good-morning my own precious one! I am just aroused from my slumber, which had been disturbed at 3.0 in the night by an insolent bat. My man, my dog & myself hunted the beast for nearly half an hour before we at last managed to catch the brute in a corner. Then I went to bed again but could not by all possible means go to sleep as I became very hot. All that comes from staying up too late by night & from keeping an open window, but it is so warm you cannot pass a night without any fresh air! I know you agree with me little girly-dear because you also like cold fresh air in the rooms and open windows if possible. —

Noch einmal, noch einmal, noch einmal — nachtigal!.. Oh! that delightful sweet melody. For ever shall I love it & remember those golden days in Coburg! If you only knew how dreadfully I miss my darling little one. If I were allowed to go only on foot to see you again I would set out directly! It seemed too cruel to be separated for such an endless time, I feel I cannot stand it, I shall try to get away earlier. Of course the most heavenly thing for me would be to come & live with you a bit at Walton, but there is no place I fear at Victoria's house & it would derange her greatly. Fancy we would be quite at leisure there. oh! no that is too good to think of! —

Yesterday we all drove out in the park in a "lineika" & after that rowed about the lake in our canoes. Then there came a tremendous shower & we rushed home. It is so warm that we wear already our white uniforms; the weather is exactly like what we had in Darmstadt. Ella & Serge (the governors) came for tea & stayed till after dinner. How those reminded me of those evenings at the schloss when we had nowhere to go to during the hofconcerts & of all that row going on in that small room smelling of bier & smoke.

It is a Sunday & in a few minutes I must go to my Parents & then to church. There I shall pray deeply & fervently for my own darling, that God may keep her always away from grief & sorrow and that He would help you and strengthen you my own sweet one! Good-bye until this evening my beloved precious little girl. With many & fond kisses ever & ever your own true & devoted Nicky.

№ 2.
My own sweet beloved darling Alix,
The moment I took the pen in my hand, your dear kind letter was brought in to me — coming from Darmstadt your "sweet home". Oh! how I love it now. Whenever I am free I am lying on the new map I bought at Coburg and look at the name of the place where my little girly-dear is living. How can I thank you enough my sweet one for that charming letter & little forget-me-not therein enclosed. Only my own darling ought not keep up too late in the night & especially not write letters in bed, it is too touching of you my dearest one.

Well! here I am at home again. We arrived yesterday 4.20 in the afternoon; fancy dear Papa & Mama came to the station & they seemed so happy. Of course I told them all what you wanted me to say and they gave in at once & said you would not have to abschwören the old belief, but that it would live with Ella. You don't know my darling how happy I felt that they understood your reason and that they consented at once; I am only too glad to be the first one who may comfort you by that. Everybody here is really touching, all the servants & people of the house come flying into my room & each has got a kind word to say. Oh! how happy I am to have taken such a lot of your dear photos, the writing table & cupboards are covered with them & wherever I look I see my sweet little girly-dear looking back at me, sometimes with a sly look, which makes me think of a certain house on the road from Coburg to Ketchendorf on the left!!!!

The weather is heavenly and we go out altogether walking twice a day. But there is no Rosenau to drive to in the afternoon. And now I love it so much, not because I am gone but because you used to pick flowers there with me. Now my sweet little one I must finish as it is time for luncheon. All send you their fondest love. But mine is the strongest & every blessing fr. yr. own Nicky

Мая 18/30 1894.

Красное Село.
Моя милая дорогая Аликс,
Tenderest kisses & loving thanks for your dear letter № 26, that I was oh! so happy to receive! Bless you darling! for all the kind things you say. If I were now by your side sweety, I feel I would have nearly throttled you with my kisses! I am afraid I have spoiled your photos, standing on my table, on that account, by pressing the image of your beloved face to my lips. Is it a sacrilège? — Darling, what are you talking about being gouty! Only those who have consumed too much wine in their youth have got it — either it is inherited! Both not being the case I don't believe it — I mean what Dr Oliver thinks! But still it is too tiresome for words, that my poor little girly-dear should suffer now & being so young too. How I wish it were me, who had those pains & not you my own true love! These are not simple words, but a deeply felt regret! — I have again been to Gatchina for a few hours, stayed there for dinner & am now back. It is getting warm, thank goodness, as the cold & damp have a bad effect upon my poor soldiers. There were 7 men laid up this morning with fever, rheumatisms etc. which is not astonishing as the poor people live in tents. — I got a very sweet letter from dear Toria today, she is so awfully sorry that she sees you & has seen you so very seldom — which I also find. But we absolutely must, darling, try & get away for a few days & spend them with aunt Alix & the girls. I do love old Marlborough H. it was quite a second home to me last year! But except that I don't want to go anywhere & shall certainly not allow anybody to separate me from my sweet little bride no! no! for nothing in the world!

Forgive me if this letter is dull & short, but I have nothing to write about; that after all is no excuse, because were I clever & not a simple old Spötter, you might have received such funny letters full of wit & of pretty verses. But I know nothing & can only copy what I have heard other people say or the little I remember of my reading. "The Prince of India" is coming to an end; I read it by fragments, going or coming back from Gatchina. It is a lovely book! What was the novel called you have just finished, sweety? — Now I must finish this idiotic epistle of mine not to send you quite asleep, my beloved little owl! Good-bye, my sweet primrose, my delightful pink-flower! Your old cowslip sends you his hearty wishes of health & happiness & prays God to send down upon you all His blessings & bestow you with His merciful gifts! A 1000 tender kisses my own Alix fr. yr. ever deeply loving old
Nicky

COBURG
This sad Wednesday.
Apr. 20/May 2 1894.
№ I.
My sweet darling beloved Alix!
Oh! it was too awful saying good-bye like that with a lot of people looking on from all sides! I shall never forget the sweet & yet smiling expression of your angelic face looking out of the window as the train was beginning to move! To know that you had to spend 9 hours in that small compartment nearly by yourself — was cruel to me & especially the thought that I was of no help any more!

The coming home was more than unpleasant and when I came into my room, where you had just been a few minutes before, I could not keep back my tears. But then oh! what a delightful surprise — on my table in the bed-room there lay a note from you, my darling little girl. Thank you & thank you for the soothing comforting words that you wrote in it. Oh! really those few lines did me good! Certainly, my love, I shall speak with Papa about that question, and I beg you always to remember that in everything, where you shall need my help, you may be sure that I shall be there by your side & that also a deeply loving and thankful heart where ever it is, will always beat in time with your's, my sweet one.

All these days I was so overcome with joy and happiness, being by my darling's side, that I could not say or tell you the hundredth part of what I might have spoken. I feel very deeply and then I cannot get the words out; it is stupid & tiresome, but so it is. I hope that this shyness or whatever it is will pass, for next time we meet we shall know more of each other than in the beginning. Oh! how impatient I am for the moment when I can again press my lips to your sweet soft face! Alix, my own darling, you don't know how you have changed me by stretching out a fond hand & by making me rise up to you — the emblem of real pure love & faith! No! do not think that these are vain words, no they come from my innermost feeling of admiration, trust & love that you have inspired me with.

I must again repeat the same words I told you my precious little girl, the day of our engagement, that all my life belonged to you and that I could never be enough thankful to you dearest, for all you have done, are doing & are going to do, for me! May God help & protect you on the difficult beginning of your path! My prayers, blessings & thoughts are constantly with my darling little thing! — Of course they all went to Rosenau and I was dragged with the rest. Ella & Sandro drove in our pony-carriage with Caesar, I went in the linéika. We drove up past the festung, and then our nice road along the hill down to Rosenau where we took tea. Before that we took a walk, I saw our bench where the hare came over, then I went along the stream, looked at the grotto, found these primroses on the side of the hill — and felt suddenly that I loved that place dearly! The weather was too fine for the occasion, the sun was bright, but I was so lonely!!! — I do hope the passage was a smooth one & that my sweet little owl did not suffer & is not too much tried by her journey. Give my best love to Granny.

And now good-bye my own darling beloved Alix. God bless you once more! + душка!
Ever & for ever your own deeply loving &
thankful Nicky

to Madeleine.

Note: Festung = fortress.

"tried" = tired.

душка = darling.

The letter excerpt:

English translation (my own):

Abas-Tuman. No. 4. 13th April 1894.
My dear Xenia!
... Thank God Nicky is finally engaged to Alix. You will not believe how happy I was about it; it is a great happiness that she agreed in the end, otherwise a very unpleasant story could have come out, especially because of Malechka; it is necessary to be surprised at one thing, how until now Papa and Mama do not know anything about her. It's good that it ended like that.

It would be interesting to know why Alix refused Nicky at first, this is very strange.

The diary entry:

1 апреля. Среда.

English translation (my own):

April 1. Wednesday.
... A very strange occurrence that I notice in myself: I never thought that two identical feelings, two loves are simultaneously compatible in the soul. Now it is already the fourth year that I love Alix H. and I constantly cherish the thought if, God willing! I should someday marry her! The next winter I fell deeply in love with Olga D., but now it is gone! And from the camp of 1890 to this time, I passionately fell in love (platonically) with little K. An amazing thing is our heart!

At the same time, I can't stop thinking about Alix! Can one then rightly conclude that I am very amorous? To a certain extent: yes; but I must add that on the inside I am a strict judge and extremely discriminating! This is the mood that yesterday I called impious!
