Alix wrote this letter to her sister Elisabeth in the autumn of 1890, asking her to give a piece of white heather as a good luck charm to Nicholas, whom she refers to as Pelly, before his leaving on a long world journey. "Pelly" was a nickname that Nicholas and Alix used for each other during their courtship and engagement days, and sometimes, for some reason, they would switch pronouns.

The letter:

Will you give Pelly this little piece of white heather from me; It is the only piece I have ever found, & I have always worn it on my bracelet, but I hope it may bring her more luck than me, especially on this journey.
Pelly II
